Frequently Asked Questions

Traditional tatami mats have a core of compressed rice straw, chosen for its humidity control, thermal insulation, and durability, topped with a woven rush grass (igusa) surface. This build is what gives tatami its firm yet slightly springy feel. The bottom of the tatami mat is lined with linen fabric or the same rush grass as the top layer, never blue plastic or polyurethane.

The Futon Shop’s Japanese Tatami Mat is 2 1⁄4 inches thick and made from 100% compressed straw with a straw-backed base, sized to fit standard American mattress dimensions from twin to Cal King.

Traditionally, tatami serves as a firm, breathable foundation, used as the floor to a home, then a sleeping surface with a shikibuton mattress laid on top for sleeping rather than sleeping on the bare mat. The combination gives a supportive, stable base  and the mattress is easy to fold and store during the day making the tatami mat the center of the home.

New tatami mats give off a fresh, grassy aroma from the rush grass (igusa) surface, which naturally fades over a few weeks as the mat airs out. Some also notice the surface shift from green to golden with light exposure over time.

Yes, because the rice straw core is a natural material, tatami can develop mold or dust mites if kept in a damp, poorly ventilated space. Keeping the mat dry, avoiding shoes on it, and airing the room regularly helps prevent this. Lift and fold your futon during the day to let your tatami mat naturally breath. Lift your tatami mat every now and then to air out both sides of your mat unless it is your floor. Wool mattresses help to keep your tatami mat clean and dry.
