Body Impression

Some new mattresses and futons will develop indentations at some points during the life of the mattress. If your mattress is mostly fiber and tufted, we pre-compress every bat of wool and cotton inside your mattress or futon. After we fill your mattress with all the ingredients we then tuft each mattress with 36-84 tufts (depending on the size) to ensure your mattress will arrive to you even and flat. After use of your mattress the Cotton and Wool fibers will start to compress. Compression of 10-15% is normal for fibers from plants and animals and usually takes place in the first 60 days with daily use. There are several things you must do to ensure proper natural compression. Flipping or rotating your mattress frequently, and sleeping on all parts of your mattress including the center will help avoid bumps or lumps where no one sleeps.

The body impressions are normal and anticipated in the design of your mattress. As the comfort layers compress, the performance of your mattress will actually improve. Body impressions up to 1.5 inches will remain throughout the life of the set and are not warranty concern. Be sure to rotate your mattress every 2-3 weeks for the 1st six months. Rotate every 3-4 months.

New Mattress & Futon Scent

New odors are common, Mattresses are vacuum sealed immediately after and when the plastic is first opened, you will notice a scent. This scent is not harmful and will dissipate in 3-7 days

Tack holes and Small Impressions

Futons and mattresses are hand-made, so you can expect to find minor, tack holes, scuffs, blemishes and small fabric flaws and loose threads. These inconsistencies are common and do not affect the durability of your new futon or mattress. Clip, do not pull loose threads.

Slatted Foundation

Futons and mattresses need to be on a slatted foundation for air flow.

Body Impression

All new topper /shikifuton will develop indentations especially during the first 5 months of use. Your wool topper or shiki need to be aired out and folded in half for a few hours when you change your sheets which will allow the middle of the topper to air out evenly.

These impressions are normal and anticipated in the design of your topper or shikifuton, but can be avoided by flipping and rotating your mattress weekly and air drying every time you change your sheets. As the comfort layers compress, the performance of your mattress will actually improve. Body impressions up to 1.5 inches will remain throughout the life of the set and are not a warranty concern. Be sure to rotate your topper or shikifuton every week for the lifespan of your topper or shikifuton.

New Topper /Shikifuton Scent

New orders are common, Mattresses are vacuum sealed immediately after and when the plastic is first opened, you will notice a scent. This scent is not harmful and will dissipate in 3-7 days

Tack holes and Small Impressing

Toppers & shikifutons are hand-made, so you can expect to find minor, tack holes, scuffs, blemishes and small fabric flaws and loose threads. These inconsistencies are common and do not affect the durability of your new topper or shikifuton. Clip, do not pull loose threads.

Shikifutons Should Be Used On A Floor Or A Solid Foundation

Shikifutons need air circulation as the natural fibers can mold without air circulation. If you place your shiki directly on a flat surface you must place a natural coir pad or tatami mat underneath your shikibuton to ensure your shikibuton will not mold, as it absorbs moisture from the air and from your body.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS FUTON FRAMES AND PLATFORM BEDS

Wood is a natural material with variations of color, shade, configuration, streaks and grain structure. Each individual piece of The Futon Shop furniture has characteristic markings that will differ from photo and showroom samples.

  • 1. Do not expose your furniture to heat or liquids
  • 2. Avoid using oil/thinner based furniture cleaners. Use water based cleaners or a damp cloth only.
  • 3. Articles such as glasses, bookends, flowerpots and hot cups and dishes should have a cloth or felt type pads underneath for protection. Beware of some felt pads that have a pre-glued side as some of these adhesives contain chemicals that can damage the finish.
  • 4. Always remember to lift objects rather than slide them across the finish.
  • 5. Tighten the nuts and bolts every few months to avoid wear and tear, especially on moving parts.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR ORGANIC SOFA

The Futon Shop, has designed our natural and organic sofas to last a long time and stand up to everyday lifestyle. Our sofa collections are designed with organic and natural materials that are non toxic with no harmful Petrochemical or glues. With simple steps your furniture can last a lifetime.

Upholstery Cushions

Rotate cushions and pillows weekly to distribute wear, seat and back cushions should be reversed and/or rotated regularly, and protect your sofa from direct sunlight, which may cause fabric to fade unevenly Vacuum your sofa’s upholstery using the upholstery attachment, this will add air circulation and will help to keep your sofa fluffy and cozy. If your slipcover or sofa case gets stains, professional clean your slipcovers to insure they will not shrink Immediately blot spills with a clean white cloth. Organic Dry Clean-Only Slipcovers use a reputable dry cleaner or professional upholstery cleaner. Always dry clean the entire slipcover for uniform results. Close all zippers prior to cleaning.

The inside cushion of your sofa needs to be aired out without the slip cover. Place them in a sunny window for a few hours monthly. This will keep the natural fibers fluffy and buoyant for continued comfort and support.

COTTON SLIPCOVERS AND PILLOW CASES

We recommend organic dry cleaning, but you can wash cotton slipcovers and pillow cases. If you want to wash your cotton covers, COLD water only, gentle cycle, and turn your slipcovers inside out before washing them.

The gentler the fabric is treated, the longer your slipcovers will last. If possible, try and wash the whole set at the same time to maintain the same shade and finish across the whole set.

Most cotton slipcovers will get softer after each wash, and darker fabrics may fade very slightly, but that’s part of the charm of a slipcover. Your slipcover should last several years, since most are washed just a few times a year.

How to dry and iron your cotton slipcovers

If you’ve heard of the myth of fitting the covers while they are still damp, it’s true! Leave them to drip dry in the shade for a few hours and put the covers on the sofa while they’re still a little damp. The covers slip on easier as they’re looser, and as the covers dry they will tighten slightly around the frame and cushion for a nice snug fit. Once the damp covers are fitted, keep the air flow moving as much as you can around the sofa – turn on the fan and keep the windows open.

If your covers need ironing, now’s a great time to sharpen up the corners of the pleats and skirts. But wait until the covers are fully dry to iron the rest – wet ironing can sometimes stretch out your slipcovers.

How to spot clean cotton slipcovers

Moisten a clean cloth or sponge with water and press the cloth gently against the fabric. Work your way from the edges of the affected area into the centre, blotting the stain as you go. Then, press clean paper towels against the damp fabric after the furniture has been cleaned. This will absorb excess moisture and speed up the drying process.

Cotton slipcover care guide

  • Machine wash not exceeding 30°C.
  • Iron on medium heat.
  • Do not bleach.
  • Drip dry in shade only.
  • Do not tumble dry.
  • Do not wring.
  • Do not expose to direct/indirect sunlight.
  • Fit covers back on sofa when slightly damp.
  • Vacuum upholstered furniture regularly.
  • When possible rotate cushions regularly.

Wool and Linen slipcovers and pillowcases

Wool and linen slipcovers and pillows can only be organically dry-cleaned. DO NOT WASH.

Polyester Slipcovers and pillowcases.

Polyester is made up of synthetic fibers that are strong and durable. There is a wide range of polyester fabrics, and they are known to be soft, durable and hard-wearing. Often polyester is blended with natural fibers to get the best of both worlds.

How to wash your polyester slipcovers

Most of the time, polyester covers are safe to be thrown into the washing machine, on a cold wash on the gentlest cycle of your machine. For extra protection, turn your slipcovers inside out before washing them.

How to dry and iron your polyester slipcovers

Before you throw the covers into the dryer, know that polyester is prone to melt under high temperatures. Polyester covers can hold up for a short time in the dryer, on a low temperature setting, but be careful not to leave them in there for too long. Zippers and velcro straps can also be worn down in a tumble dryer,

Generally we recommend drip drying your covers in the shade, which shouldn’t take too long, as polyester covers don’t absorb much water and dry pretty quickly.

Polyester covers don’t wrinkle easily, so that should save the job of ironing but for that crisp look, ironing the corners of skirts and the pleats inside out under low/medium heat should do the trick.

How to spot clean polyester slipcovers

Spot treatment for polyester fabrics is similar to that for cotton. Moisten a cloth/sponge with water and press the cloth gently against the fabric. Work your way from the edges of the affected area into the centre, blotting the stain as you go. Then, press clean towels against the damp fabric after the furniture has been cleaned. This will absorb excess moisture and speed the drying process.
