The journey of our linen begins in the nurturing earth. The flax plant, Linum usitatissimum, grows from seed to harvest in a mere 100 days. It flourishes with very little water and minimal care, making it a true champion of sustainable agriculture. During its short growing season, the crop bursts into delicate blue flowers that provide a vital sanctuary for birds and bees.
Every part of the flax plant serves a purpose, from stalk to seed, yielding food, cosmetics, oil, and our exquisite fabric. As a fully biodegradable natural fiber, linen leaves no harmful trace behind, protecting the environment we all cherish. Cultivating flax also actively nurtures our planet. According to the European Confederation of Linen and Hemp, flax cultivation captures over 250,000 tons of CO2 every year.
Our fabric carries a story lovingly woven through generations. The flax originates from Mallon Linen, a dedicated farm in Northern Ireland where the unique climate nurtures strong, beautiful fibers. Each yard is thoughtfully crafted to a luxurious 650 gsm (grams per square meter), resulting in linen that is exceptionally durable, weighty, and refined.
This rich heritage traces back to 1798, when Mr. John Hanna built the Shankbridge Mill. Hanna distinguished his mill by blending chemical expertise with engineering advancements. He recognized that combining both disciplines was essential to elevate woven linen into a master-crafted textile.
The legacy expanded when the Baird family established their business in 1912. Operating one of the final factories built during the Irish linen revolution, they equipped their floor with 400 modified Atherton looms. Under the guidance of William James Burgoyne Baird, the family acquired John Hanna's historic Shankbridge dyeing and finishing works in 1991. Today, that unbroken chain of knowledge ensures every yard of fabric meets a standard of uncompromising excellence.

Piping or welting is a thick cotton cording wrapped in fabric, that is sewn on your futon cover wherever there are seams. This decorative addition makes a futon mattress look more like a cushion or a conventional box spring style mattress as it squares of the edges and can create a complimentary color distinction when looking at your futon. Many feel this simple embellishment to their mattress or futon cover greatly adds to the look of their futon and gives extra visual dimension. For the piping you can choose the same fabric or a contrasting fabric, depending on what look you are going for. Mix and match to create a futon that is as stunning visually as it is comfortable to sleep on. If you want a square linear look to your futon just add piping. By environment, I am referring to not only the space itself, but the what other items are the sharing the space and who will be using it. As an example, do you have children or pets? Will this be used as a main piece of furniture in a living room, or as an occasional in the guest room. If you are in a moist environment or are planning to have your mattress outside, an acrylic outdoor futon slipcover will be ideal rather than a cotton futon slipcover as cotton absorbs moisture and the acrylic is both moisture and mold resistant.
