GOTS, stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and is used throughout the world to create an equal measure for textiles claiming to be organic. This standard encompasses not only takes into account the organic nature of the fibers and fabric, but also includes ecological and social requirements as well. It is not enough to just claim something is organic, the manner by which it is grown, the land it is grown on and the impact that the fiber has on the local ecology is all taken into account.
The GOTS standard for organic fabric used in mattress and futon manufacturing covers the processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, distribution of organic fabric. Leather is not included in this certification. When manufacturing from organic fibers, the certification is recognized globally with IFOAM, USDA and NOP. The fabric or fiber must contain 95% certified organic materials to be called organic and 70% organic materials to say made with organic materials.
GOTS manufacturing and processing requirements include all the stages from movement of the organic fibers. For instance, USDA certifies raw organic cotton from the cotton farmer, but GOTS certifies the fiber processing into thread for cloth. Dyes must meet requirements on toxicity and biodegradability. No toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, Chlorine bleach, aromatic solvents, nano particles or GMO sizing agents, PVC, nickel or chrome. Most importantly GOTS certifies the entire processing chain, with on-site audits and residue testing.
