Why do Japanese sleep on a thin mattress?

Typical Japanese futons aren’t very thick and go straight on the floor – or on tatami, which are mats – and so give you a solid, level place to sleep; this helps your back stay in a good position, and means the bed linen can be put away during the day, making rooms adaptable, tidy and neat.
