How do I know when my tatami mat needs replacing?

A well-maintained Japanese tatami mat lasts 5 to 10 years. Watch for a core that no longer bounces back after compression, a persistent musty smell that doesn’t clear after airing, or widespread fraying of the weave. Gradual color change from pale green to warm gold is completely normal aging.
