What is a futon?

The word Futon originates from Japan; it actually means a complete bed unit ( shikibuton, futon and kakibuton.)
Many Eastern cultures sleep lower to the ground, while the Japanese named this style of bedding, the Futon. The Japanese sleep with a tatami mat or flooring, giving their cotton as well as cotton and wool mattresses breathing ability, their futons are thin so they can roll them up and store the futon in the closet during the day. The western cultures in the 70’s picked up this eastern tradition of sleeping on all natural fibers.

The Futon Shop’s history marks key points following the era of the Futon Frame time line. In 1980, William Brower a Boston architect who enjoyed working in wood, designed a beautiful black walnut hardwood futon frame that folded in three parts. This futon frame was displayed in the Arts and Craft museum next to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City.

This was the start of westernizing the futon from a mattress into a comfortable functional couch, with all natural fibers inside. When you walk into one of our showrooms, many customers come in and say, “wow! Futons have come a long way!” It is true. Futons essentially are mattresses to sleep on, but The Futon Shop is the leading company in the nation with manufacturing and distributing the highest quality and newest designs in the futon frame and futon field. The Futon Shop carries futon mattresses as just futon mattresses for their platform bed line, as well as for their futon couches. Over the past few years, companies have offered one piece click clack modern sofa beds or sofa sleepers and have called them futons, when actually they are not. Here is a futon sofa bed and a click clak sofa bed.

What's inside my mattress?

The Futon Shop has been specializing in futon mattresses since 1976. Their futon mattresses all have the main ingredient, cotton. You may pick from medium grade cotton, staple cotton, or organic cotton.

Then there are other options all depending on your comfort style. We have firm, medium, and soft soy foams, springs, and individually pocketed coils, and latex and wool.

The Futon Shop has eight categories:

1) Organic (Organic cotton with different ingredients from our other categories)

2) Egyptian Cotton (futon mattresses with mainly cotton as the ingredient)

3) Comfort Care Collection ( futon mattresses with springs)

4) The Essence Collection (futon mattresses with wool and latex)

5) Royal Contour Soybean collection (futon mattresses with a lighter soybean foam feel)

6) Life enhancement Collection( futon mattresses with memory soyfoam)

7) Organic baby crib collection ( baby crib mattresses with 100% certified organic cotton)

8) Customize your mattress

Will my futon lump?

Futons have come a long way. Ten to fifteen years ago, futon mattresses did not have any foam core and the cotton options were limited. Most shops selling futon mattresses presently do not know what kind of cotton is inside their mattresses, and they just sell low price futon mattresses. You get the mattress home and within a few months your mattress has slid half way down your frame, has a huge dip where you have been sitting or laying, and your futon mattress is lumpy around the whole futon.

The Futon Shop has been specializing in manufacturing futon mattresses since 1976, and they have improved their futon mattresses, by finding the best green and organic fibers to give you the best quality in your futon mattress and for your platform bed.

The Futon Shop has found Staple cotton to be the best quality cotton to avoid lumpiness for their futon mattresses. Low-grade cotton has short fibers, which do not hold the moisture for very long and tend to break and become a lumpy futon mattress. Top grade Staple cotton has the strongest strands taken from the top of the cotton plant. 100% staple cotton futons therefore resist forming balls or lumps and give futons a longer life expectancy.

The Futon Shop uses the best quality long fiber staple cotton for 90% of their futon mattresses. You can choose from over 15 futon mattresses with Wool, Latex , Organic , Soy foam, Soy memory foam Latex and for your platform bed or futon sofa sleeper frame.

Why get wool in my futon mattress?

The Futon Shop adds Virgin Wool to our futon mattresses for a cushier, softer feel; the light fluffy wool fiber has a crimped construction that acts like a spring. We use naturally long crimp wool grown in the United States that does not have to be artificially crimped. Also, wool wicks away moisture resulting in a longer lasting futon mattress. Wool fibers are naturally long and crimped adding softness and spring to the mattress. Wool blended futons are considered a higher quality futon for 3 main reasons:

1. Wool fibers don’t hold moisture the way cotton does, the moisture is instead wicked away.

2. The longer fibers, when blended with cotton, result is a stronger, more comfortable, and more durable futon.

3. A wool futon, with proper ventilation, will help to regulate temperature.

Why get Memory Foam in my Futon Matress?

If you have ever slept or sat on anything memory foam, you will know right away why our memory foam mattresses have been our hottest items. These memory foam futon mattresses cradle your back while you sit and while you rest on your futon couch.

The Futon Shop is the only futon retailer in California that manufactures memory foam as well as all their foams in any of our mattresses with the least amount of polyurethane.

These futon mattresses also support your spine as you sleep, leaving you with a rested feel when you wake up in the morning. The memory foam has been proven to be best suited for side sleepers because these kind of sleepers need extra support for their hips and shoulders. It also supports side sleepers because it is the most supportive for your spine as you lie all your weight on your futon mattress. The memory foam slowly compresses and then slowly bounces back to its original shape, while gently comforting your joints and muscles as you sleep. The Futon Shop uses the highest and thickest memory foam, 5lb density memory foam. The memory foam is essential for side sleepers because they need more support for their shoulders and hips.

What mattress is the best if I have back problems?

There is no single mattress style or type that works for all people back. Although any mattress that helps someone sleep without pain and stiffness is the best mattress for that individual. A good mattress should provide back support for the natural curves and alignment of the spine. The right amount of back support also helps you avoid muscle soreness in the morning. While there is not much clinical data about mattresses, one study found that medium-firm mattresses usually provide more back pain relief than firm mattresses.

Overall comfort while sleeping on the mattress is equally important as sufficient back support. Sleeping on a mattress that is too firm can cause aches and pains on pressure points. A medium-firm mattress may be more comfortable because it allows the shoulder and hips to sink in slightly.

If an old mattress sags visibly in the middle or is no longer comfortable, it is probably time to purchase a new one. Putting boards under a sagging mattress to keep it from sagging in the middle is only a short-term fix for the sagging; a new mattress is still needed.

The Futon Shop suggests you come in a lie down on our mattresses before you choose one at any of our California locations.

Or call 1-800-44-FUTON to speak to any one of our Futon Specialists. Take your time, lie on your side, back and stomach.Take you time and choose the right mattress for your body type.

Firm or Soft? What is better? Which will last longer?

Comfort is different for everyone. Some love a soft bed or futon mattress, while others can’t sleep on anything harder than a brick. But what is constant among all ingredients: Staple cotton and latex.

These are the two ingredients you should have in your mattress for the longest lasting effect. We have plenty of futon mattresses that are firm and soft, but through and through Latex is the most durable core you can put in your mattress. And Staple cotton, whether it is organic or not will help your futon mattress avoid lumping, breaking, or dipping.

What if I want a firm futon Mattress, but I do not want any foam because of "off-gassing"?

We offer 5 great organic mattresses with no foam, but are all firm as well. Try the:

Organic Futon Mattress | Organic latex futon mattress | Comfort Rest futon mattress | Serenity futon mattress | Serenity futon mattress topper

Could I put my new Futon Mattress on my box spring mattress or on the floor?

That would not be advisable. Futon mattresses have cotton as their main ingredient and they all need slatted bed frames or futon frames. This also applies with no flat wood or use of your futon mattress on the floor. If you do lay your futon mattress on the above, mold will occur inside your mattress.

And your futon mattress will get very heavy from moisture not being released, leaving your futon mattress left with moisture soaking in the cotton and breaking your cotton fibers decreasing the lifespan of your futon mattress.

What mattress is best if my guests are on the heavier side?

Any of our quality futon mattresses will support weekend guests. For longer term guests or every night sleep, we stand behind all our futon mattresses. For more information please call 1-800-44-FUTON and speak to one of our futon specialist or come on in.

Why does my mattresses have holes in it?

When we tack the mattress occasionally the tacking needle gets rejected resulting in an occasional minor hole in the mattress. This will not affect the life or use of the futon mattress whats-so-ever. If the mattress has numerous (7 or more that is a defect and we can repair it for you).

There is an odor coming from my mattress. What is it?

Cotton sometimes has a fresh field odor. We do not treat our cotton with anything nor do we bleach or wash it it is organic from the field. Also if a cotton futon is in a bag it needs to be aired out a few days to get the petro-chemical odor from the plastic bag. Also some people are sensitive to the sizing of the outside fabrics. If so you need to use a mattress pad.

I wasnt told to flip or rotate my mattress.

We publish our care instructions on-line at http://www.thefutonshop.com/documents/Mattress-Warranty.pdf . Cotton needs to be rotated quarterly. When a futon mattress is new it should be rotated every time you change your sheets for the first 3 months than quarterly after that. Every customer received a email mail of their invoice with a link to our mattress care instructions at the time of purchase.

I wasn't told I needed a slated surface for my futon.

Every futon needs to be on a slatted frame not on the floor or on a plywood frame see http://www.thefutonshop.com/documents/Mattress-Warranty.pdf for more information. Every customer received a email mail of their invoice with a link to our mattress care instructions at the time of purchase.

What type of flame retardant do you use in your mattress?

We use a borax in our cotton or a cotton sock soaked in sodium on our latex and memory foams and folding foam beds. We would happily make your mattress without borax or a sock with a Dr. note.

Our wool is natural and uses no flame retardants. You can use wool as a barrier on the top layer as well.

Can I get a mattress without flame retardants?

We use no fire retardant in our foams, wool latex or spring and fabric in our futon mattresses but our cotton has borax or boric acid. Borax is orderless white powder that we sprinkle on our cotton. Just give us a Dr. note and we will make you futon mattress with no Borate.

Does your foam have flame retardants?

No our foam in our futon mattresses are soy-based foam and poured without fire retardants.

What type of flame retardants do you use?

Borax (boric acid) in our cotton futon or a cotton sock that is soaked in a natural sodium solution is all we use in our futon mattresses.

Our wool in our futon is borax free

What is borate?

Borate is Borax orderless and white powder minded from the earth in the Mohave desert. Here is the fact sheet on borate http://www.thefutonshop.com/images/BoricAcidDataSheet.pdf

Why is my mattress moldy?

A futon mattress or any mattress can mold if it gets no air circulation. You must not use your mattress on the floor or on a solid piece of wood. The moisture from your body and air gets absorbed into the top of the mattress and it it can not be released than it will stay in the cotton as cotton absorbs moisture and could mold. That is why we offer futon and platform beds with slats.

My mattress is so stiff it wont bend.

A futon mattress needs to be broken in and bend especially when it is new. Put some muscle into it. After a few weeks it will settle into a bent shape without any help.

My mattress has a sink hole where i sleep.

If you never sun dried, rotated or flipped your futon mattress it can develop a sink hole where you sleep. Simply put it in the sun for a day on each side and it should fluff back up to some extent. see our warranty mattress care sheet you got as a link on your invoice http://www.thefutonshop.com/documents/Mattress-Warranty.pdf.

-----FUTON FRAMES QUESTIONS-----
What size futon couch will fit in my space?

Two styles:

1) Space savers/loveseats (less than 66” of wall space) Space savers- these save space along your wall. If you have less than 66 inches along your wall and 75” into your room, this small futon size will be sufficient. Space savers futon frames are also called futon loveseats. They not only save space along your wall, but when you pull it out into your room, you have a chaise lounge effect. The futon sofa has three positions: a small space saving sofa, a lounger with an ottoman, and a bed. These styles come in twin, double and queen.

If I like a soft couch, will my futon still give me support?

Spring coils has been a great-added feature to futons in the last 10 years. What people like about our Futon mattresses at The Futon Shop is that they are not all that extremely firm futon from the 70’s. We still have the extremely firm futon mattresses, but for the consumers who like the plusher feel, inner spring coils futons have become our most popular item. Also, try our Royal Contour Collection. These futon mattresses have light weight soybean foam with a spongy feel. Most customers like this mattress because you can sit back into your mattress and they say it feels just like sitting on a cloud.

This is not the best for sleeping every night, but as a everyday couch, this just might be the best solution for someone looking for a soft couch. Try out these futon Mattresses: The New Relaxer | The Merlin ( meant for occasional use only) | Crown Contour ( a special two sided mattress) | Natural rest (Organic Selection same as the Merlin, but with Organic cotton)

The Futon Shop has two styles of futon frames:

All frames from the Futon Shop are hard wood, front loaders, and use sustainable wood. All the woods in our futon frame collections are grown using Sustainable Forest Management to provide you with the best quality product and also care for our environment.

1) Strata- Wall Huggers

When you put your futon converter against the wall, this style Frame does not need to be moved away from the wall, while opening the couch into a bed. You avoid scratching your floor, you save space in your room, and you bypass hurting your back while moving the frame to convert into a bed. This style of frame is efficient for futon users who will be opening the frame every day and for users who want the easiest mechanism for their furniture. Also, this frame sits a little more deep and flat in the seat than any of our other frame styles.

2) Lifestyle Solution- non wall hugger

If you need to open the frame, you will need to move the frame away from the wall about 8 inches away to make into a bed. This frame needs a little more effort to open, but the advantage is that you can add drawers and it has a recline position.

How much weight can my futon hold?

Full or queen futon frames and futon mattresses will support the weight of two average people.

What if my futon frame breaks?

Your futon frame has to be in a locked position for it to stay in position. Check under the seat section to ensure that the wedges that hold the hardwood or wallhugger futon frame in place are intact and haven't fallen off.

How often should i tighten my frame?

You should tighten your futon frame every year at least. Keep the allen wrench that came with the frame to tighten once a year depending on usage.

There is an odor coming from my wool mattress. What is it?

American Wool sometimes has a fresh odor. Also if a wool futon is in a bag it needs to be aired out a few days to get the petro-chemical odor from the plastic bag. Sometimes it could take up to a week for the smell to dissipate. We also recommend allowing the mattress exposure to the sun to help the process.

Why is the estimate on your website for custom cushions cheaper than what the sales person quoted me?

The quotes are just they they say quotes, they do not measure for odd shapes that are not rectangular or straight edges. Also if it is latex or soy-foam we must cut an entire core for the smaller piece you may want and we would have a charge you for the entire core or bun. If you add cotton or wool to your cushion or mattress it does not calculate the permanent cover under the slip cover.

What if I am on a budget?
The Futon Shop has three mattresses for customers who are on a tight budget or the mattress which can be used just a few times a year or for a temporary basis.
The economy cotton in these three mattresses (Merlin, Ramses3, Stratus ) are made from the residue fibers and dust particles that collect in the flue. It is less able to hold its shape, adds weight, and is prone to breakage.
We also have dorm room specials that include a frame, futon mattress, and futon cover with free shipping.
What if my pets or child has an accident on my futon?
We have washable covers so your covers will be saved, but the mattress will need to be replaced. All the futon mattresses are tacked, so you will not be able to unzip and replace the cotton.
