The Futon Shop strives to create the kind of awareness that will empower the eco-conscience consumer to understand what is in the products they are buying, and that they have choices. The reason that laws have been mandated to control fire resistant mattresses is consumer safety from deadly house fires. The latest federal fire regulation is 16 CFR part 1633, which requires all mattresses to pass an open flame test. In California Technical Bulletin 117 applies for upholstered furniture and mandates every single component in an upholstered sofa be flame retardant.
According to US consumer Product Safety Commission, under regulated FDA flammability requirements of 16 CFR part 1633, with a doctor’s prescription from a licensed health care professional, one can purchase a bed or mattress without fire retardants. The Futon Shop has followed the law, by adding the most natural fire retardant to our cotton batting in the form of Borate aka Borax, aka Boric Acid. As for All Futon mattresses manufactured at The Futon Shop, the fire retardant boric acid is only sprinkled into the cotton, and no fire retardant exist in our soy-foam, latex or wool. Boric acid is not a known carcinogen by the EPA, the state of California or the IARC International Agency for Research on Cancer.

A recent HBO Documentary titled, "The Toxic Hot Seat", discusses the issues of chemical flame retardants and their adverse affects on health. It's estimated that 90 percent of Americans have some level of flame-retardant chemicals in their bodies. More disturbing, is that many of these chemicals are also known to accumulate in breast milk. This alone is highly disturbing because many studies have linked them to human health risks including infertility, birth defects, lower IQ scores, behavioral problems in children, and liver, kidney, testicular, and breast cancers.
Moreover, the documentary goes into how the tobacco industry was instrumental in pushing legislation for chemical flame retardants in furniture, as nearly 40 percent of Americans smoked, creating a major source of fires. Rather than creating a self extinguishing cigarette, the tobacco industry, under increasing pressure to make fire-safe cigarettes, created a front group called the National Association of State Fire Marshals, who, rather than forcing the issue of creating self extinguishing cigarettes, pushed for federal standards for fire-retardant furniture.

October Was Breast Cancer Awareness Month
In October we joined in the fight to end Breast Cancer, as we proudly Sponsored Boarding For Breast Cancer. During the entire month of October 2015, 1% of every chemical free mattress or futon sold by The Futon Shop was donated to Boarding For Breast Cancer to educate our young woman and men. The Futon Shop, in collaboration with Boarding for Breast Cancer, introduced education on prevention and lifestyle change to students throughout California in the Boarding For Breast Cancer's B4BC Fall Campus Tour.
