Foam comes in many varieties ranging from foam found in your glass of beer, to packaging foams, to the foam found in your mattress our seat cushion.
An important division of solid foams is into closed-cell foams and open-cell foams. In a closed-cell foam, the gas forms discrete pockets, each completely surrounded by the solid material. In an open-cell foam, the gas pockets connect with each other.
Solid foams are an important class of lightweight cellular engineering materials. These foams can be classified into two types based on their pore structure: open-cell-structured foams (also known as reticulated foams) and closed-cell foams.
Open-cell-structured foams contain pores that are connected to each other and form an interconnected network that is relatively soft. Open-cell foams will fill with whatever they are surrounded with. If filled with air, a relatively good insulator is the result, but, if the open cells fill with water, insulation properties would be reduced.
Open cell memory foam returns to it’s previous shape quickly, and allows for more airflow through the material. Think of open cell memory foam as having tiny air balloons in its core. Even with pressure applied to the foam, air is able to flow through the memory foam mattress. This keeps the mattress cool, fresh, and dry.
Closed-cell foams do not have interconnected pores. The closed-cell foams normally have higher compressive strength due to their structures. However, closed-cell foams are also in general denser, require more material, and as a consequence are more expensive to produce. The closed cells can be filled with a specialized gas to provide improved insulation. The closed-cell structure foams have higher dimensional stability, low moisture absorption coefficients, and higher strength compared to open-cell-structured foams. All types of foam are widely used as core material in sandwich-structured composite materials. From the early 20th century, various types of specially manufactured solid foams came into use. The low density of these foams makes them excellent as thermal insulators and flotation devices, and their lightness and compressibility makes them ideal as packing materials and stuffings.
Closed memory foam is designed for many uses, and some lower-quality manufacturers may use closed cell memory foam for mattresses. These mattresses do not allow for adequate air flow, which will lead to a warm sleeping surface. The memory foam is unable to “breathe,” which traps moisture & body heat, making sleep less sound.
The Futon Shop's Soy Foam Futon Beds
Natural futon mattresses made with environmentally friendly soybean oil contain no fire retardants. As most Soy Foam Futon Mattresses contain carcinogenic chemicals in the form of fire retardants that severely damage the immune system of adults and children we have chosen this Hybrid Foam for our Soy Foam Futon Beds which reduces significantly the chances of off gassing in your home.
Due to the rise in demand for foam furniture we have designed many of our products with Foams, Cooling Gels, and Memory Foams partially derived from Soy Bean Oil. Not only are Soy Foams cooler, more durable, and more dense but they greatly reduce harm to the environment and sleeper that regular foams may cause. For shape-conforming comfort, eco-friendly properties, and the tremendous cooling benefits it provides when compared to standard foams choose Soy Based Foam mattresses from The Futon Shop.
Our Hybrid Foam replaces up to 50% of the petrochemicals used in foam production with renewable soybean oil while retaining identical conformity to offer superior comfort. With a more sustainable manufacturing process a healthier product is created while improving the foam core’s structure. With Soy Bean Infused Hybrid Foams used in our mattresses such as our Natural Rest you are getting the most supportive, resilient and comfortable foam on the market and greatly limiting the traditional uses of petrochemicals in furniture additives. For a mattress with conventional feel that is made by the most sustainable options available check out our Merlin Foam Mattress, the New Relaxer, or our Spacely Mattress.
